you made me realise [30 Jun 2008|10:56pm]
i am pleased to report that my bloody valentine live were indeed the overwhelming and transcendental experience i had always hoped for. even with earplugs it was by FAR the loudest racket my wee ears have ever taken in, yet so warm and lovely. the controversial 25 minute pure jet-engine noise assault at the end was admittedly a bit over the top, and nearly liquefied my internal organs, yet in hindsight wtf did i expect? AND to top it all off they gazed at their shoes the whole time.. magic.

conclusions: 1) see them if you can!! 2) EARPLUGS!!

life's little questions [17 Mar 2008|01:31pm]
so i am considering doing my MSc dissertation on something to do with automatic question answering. my potential adviser sent me a list of actual questions (all containing "most") that people have entered in a search engine that i would need to analyze. here are some of my faves:

How tall are most people?
What is your most embarassing moment?
What is the most powerful martial art strike you can deliver?
What is the most erotic book ever written?
What is the most contravercail question asked?
What animals are most compatible with the wolverine?
What is the most slandered of all Christmas confections?
What is the most popular Christmas decoration in China?
What kind of hamster is most easily trained?
What is the most disgusting pornography on the internet?
What are the five most important facts about color?

And my fave:
Who is the most haunting ghost?

i have nothing against vampire weekend (check this out, the singer crashed on my couch for a few days in japan, woah!) but here's what i don't get: if it was 199X would they not be some teen beat band that no one cared about? what has changed since then? i ask because i want to know when is a good time to start putting unrest 7"s up on ebay.

just what i always wanted [27 Feb 2008|01:02pm]
so after many hours of tedious recording, labeling, scripting, etc-ing, i now have a computer voice that will speak any text i type in AND SOUND A BIT LIKE ME! WOW! here is an example... (yes, it sounds like crap!). if that doesn't get me an awesome job, i don't know what will..

i received the most wonderful email from my grandma, after she had listened to my radio show..

"Was the TWO HEADED BOY a "snowman"...couldn't quite figure it out from the lyrics ??"

if only i could get grandma to interpret all obtuse indie rock lyrics! the world would be a better place, non?

RATS! [17 Jan 2008|08:39pm]
when i returned to scotland from winter break, i found that two wee rats had taken up residence in my walls, and occasionally popping out under my sink (bloody ground floor flats!). they were unresponsive to several strongly worded letters asking them to kindly vacate the premises posthaste, and various other attempts at "humane" removal, so as a last resort i put some poison down. dear reader, they thought it was a goddamn pizza party! i got to thinking it's not a bad way to go, if you've got to. have a jolly nice pizza party and then two days later your insides liquefy or whatnot..

also, hanging out with linguists is a gas. while the group next to us in a pub was going on about sex and drugs, we were arguing over the swedish word for fruit ("frukt", in case you were wondering).

holland, 1945 [18 Dec 2007|01:43pm]
i'm back in the states after a two-day stopover in amsterdam. it was a lovely city overall, certain parts avoided of course. it's not so much the drug/sex tourism on its own, but the roving packs of oafish douchebags that it attracts. i've never come so close to clocking a stranger in the jaw as in the first room of the anne frank house, where the following exchange (paraphrased) occurred:
d-bag 1: what the fuck is this place?
d-bag 2: it's like culture or something. i have to tell my parents i saw something cultural.
d-bag 3: what are you guys doing here? you should go to a peep show.
d-bag 1: or a banana show. yeah.

i am very sadly NOT KIDDING!

our b&b was in a fairly residential area, but if you looked in any random window there was still a fairly good chance a bored hooker with a thousand yard stare would be looking down at you. i don't know if i could ever get used to that. one of them was air guitaring.

anyways it's good to be back.. for a little while at least. it's so cheap, the dollar feels like baht or something!!

some things i enjoy about scotland/the u.k.:

- the proclaimers are still massive local heroes. their opinion on municipal matters is highly sought after and makes front page news.

- 10:30 am on a monday morning is considered a good a time as any to have a pint at the local pub, as far as my neighbors are concerned.

- bizarre and pointlessly unhealthy foods: best so far is macaroni pie, which, as you might suspect, is a pastry shell filled with mac n cheese. cheese and onion pasties are nice as well. deep fried pizza was a bit of a let down, though to be honest i think i'd have to try the non-deep fried interpretation for a proper basis of comparison. i wish i had a picture of the counter at a takeaway shop for the mind-boggling assortment of unidentifiable fried things.

- things like this are front page news.

well i quit my job about a month ago, but my vacation time is still running out so i'd like to think i'm doing something productive while technically on the clock. so i present to you an excerpt from the savacald diary (i.e. kelly caldwell's diary age 11-13ish, entirely devoted to poetry about POISON), formerly available on we're twins records.

Happy Birthday Baby )

hot cross buns (taste the difference) [16 Jan 2007|11:42am]
just returned from a lovely (and action-packed, albeit exceptionally brief) trip to london. pictures up here, as always..

picked up the DVD of "children of men" there, (still out in theaters state-side) and it is a really really fantastic film. the obsessive level of background detail is amazing (calling all wes anderson fans?). check it out!

omg i just saw a dude i went to elementary school with on beauty & the geek. i'd wanna root for him, but he spent every painful moment of face time talking about how unfathomably, impossibly, preposterously smart he is. which is kind of all i remember him ever doing in 4th grade ("teacher can i be excused? i need to go study CALCULUS! did you hear me? CALCULUS!"). for those keeping score, this is the same class that produced "american taliban" dude.

STAND UP FOR THE CHAMPIONS!

i ate all your bees [01 Aug 2006|12:26pm]
it is my fondest wish that "stochastic" take on a new meaning, synonymous with "awesome". as in:

"dude, your grandma's potato salad is totally stochastic!"

i would prefer the spelling not be changed to "stokeastic", but it would be a small price to pay..
